Wisconsin Academy of Sports is a program, which has been structured for the true
development of sports skills. This indirect approach to development has proven
very successful for program director Carl Gardner. This type of training
originated in 1990, while coach Gardner was involved with camps for soccer
and track and field. It uses a combination of dynamic mobility training, rhythm
training, neuromuscular training, and developing the basic skills needed to
successfully excel in sports. This program has been successfully used in
communities such as Cedarburg, Brookfield, Hartford, Green Bay and the Fox
Valley. This training has also been used as part of skill development for kids
through the YMCA camps in Appleton.
Coach Gardner used this program to assist with the development of
numerous State and Regional Olympic Development Program players. Additional players that trained under this
program are now playing for NCAA College programs at DIV 1, 2, & 3
throughout the nation. Coach Gardner was selected in 2000 and 2001 to coach high
school boys from around the nation at Tourney Sport USA at Brigham Young
University Hawaii on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. He was also selected in 2001, 2003
and 2006 to coach student athletes from around the world at the USA and World
Scholar Athletes games at the University of Rhode Island. Coach Gardner led his
team of players 2001 from seven countries to the championship title with an
undefeated record of 12-0, 2003 Team USA finished 3rd place, and 2006 Team
Brazil finished 2nd with a record of 7 wins and 2 losses.
Coach Gardner was born in Jamaica, West Indies. He
moved to the US at age 9 where he grew up in the Bronx, N.Y. He played his
college soccer for Mt. Senario College, The 1979 DIV III NLCAA National
Champions. Carl earned a BS in Physical Education with an emphasis on Coaching. He has coached soccer and track for over
28 years.
Coach Gardner presently serves as the Assistant Soccer Coach at Lawrence
University and girl's Head Track and Field coach at Appleton West high school. His ability to develop highly
